The City of a Thousand Windows – Berat

Berat is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Albania’s most picturesque towns. Famous for its white Ottoman-era houses stacked along the hillside, this is one of the best day trips from Tirana and a must for your itinerary. At the heart of the city is the Berat Castle, a historic fortress that still houses residents today. When you’re there, you can explore within the castle walls. Inside, you’ll find beautiful churches, mosques, and the Onufri Museum, which features stunning Byzantine iconography.

The city is divided into two historic neighborhoods, Mangalem and Gorica, connected by the incredible Gorica Bridge. Wandering through these old streets offers a glimpse into Berat’s rich history, with its traditional stone houses and cobbled alleys. Berat is also known for its wineries, with places like Çobo Winery and Nurellari Winery offering excellent Albanian wine-tasting experiences. For food, Antigoni and Homemade Food Lili serve delicious traditional dishes in a cozy setting.

Berat is located about 1.5 to 2 hours south of Tirana. You can opt to drive or catch a bus between the cities. But I would suggest a tour so that you can get the most out of the day. However, if you do choose to make your own way there, check out some other things to do in Berat. Bovilla Lake – Turquoise Waters

The Bovilla Lake is one of the most breathtaking natural spots in Albania. Also, with it being just an hour’s drive from Tirana, it makes it one of the easiest and best day trips from Tirana. This turquoise reservoir is surrounded by rugged mountains and offers a fantastic hiking opportunity for those looking to escape the city. The Bovilla Peak Hike is one of the most popular activities here. Despite this hike being a moderately challenging climb, the rewards are unbelievable. With spectacular panoramic views of the lake and surrounding valleys. The hike takes around 45 minutes to an hour from the parking area and is suitable for most fitness levels.

After the hike, you can enjoy a picnic by the lake or visit a nearby restaurant like Bovilla Restaurant. Here, you can find fresh grilled meats and traditional Albanian food whilst admiring the vies of the surrounding area.

For this day trip, we’re heading north of Tirana, to what is known as the cultural capital. Located about two hours from Tirana, Shkodër is one of Albania’s most culturally rich cities, and one of the best day trips from Tirana. Here you will find a gorgeous city, hosting a lively atmosphere with colourful streets, street art, and a prominent connection to the country’s artistic heritage.

When you visit, you must visit the Rozafa Castle. This castle is a hilltop fortress offering panoramic views of the city, Lake Shkodër, and the surrounding mountains. According to legend, one of the builder’s wives was sealed within the walls to keep them standing. Gruesome. Anyway, another thing to see in Shkodër, especially if you’re arty, is the Marubi National Museum of Photography. This museum showcases a collection of historic Albanian photographs, offering a fascinating look into the country’s past.

If you’re more drawn to local culture, Pjaca (main boulevard) is a place you have to visit. This is a great way to experience the local culture, with its mix of architecture, lively cafes, and boutique shops. There is also much more to do in the area. For example, just outside the city, Lake Shkodër offers opportunities for boat trips, birdwatching, and enjoying the serene natural surroundings.

The city of Durrës is quite a well visited area in Albania. This beautiful seaside town is the oldest, and second-largest city in the country. With a blend of ancient history and a vibrant coastline, this is one of the best day trips from Tirana. Also, with Durrës being located just 40 minutes away, it’s a really easy trip to do. You can explore the city’s rich past while enjoying a laid-back Mediterranean atmosphere.

If history doesn’t interest you, don’t worry. Durrës Beach offers a great place for relaxation and soaking in the sun. The beach stretches along the coastline and is home to golden sands and calm waters. It’s a popular spot for both locals and tourists. With lively beach bars and seafood restaurants with fresh fish straight from the Adriatic sea. You also have the choice to visit. Golem Beach. This beach is quieter and has crystal-clear waters.

Food lovers will also appreciate a day trip to Durrës. With the city embracing influences from Italian and Albanian cuisine. Traditional seafood dishes like grilled octopus, baked sea bass, and tave kosi (baked lamb with yogurt) are must-tries. And you can also try a glass of raki or local Albanian wine for an authentic experience.

Krujë Castle

The historic town of Krujë is located just 40 minutes north of Tirana, and is a great thing for your Albania itinerary. This town is best known for it’s impressive Castle. Once the fortress of Albania’s national hero, Skanderbeg, who defended the country against Ottoman invasions in the 15th century. Inside the castle, you’ll find the Skanderbeg Museum, which showcases artifacts from the Ottoman era, and tells the story of Albania’s fight for independence. Krujë castle is a must-visit for anyone interested in Albania’s rich past and is one of the best day trips from Tirana.

Just outside the castle walls, you will find the Old Bazaar, which is one of the most picturesque in Albania. Here, you can browse traditional craft work, rugs, antiques, and souvenirs. You can also hike up to Mount Krujë, where you’ll find stunning panoramic views over the surrounding landscape. As well as this, you can stop by a traditional restaurant like Emilia’s or Panorama. These restaurants offer authentic Albanian dishes like tavë kosi (baked lamb with yogurt) and fërgesë (a delicious pepper and cheese dish).

Krujë is an easy and rewarding day trip from Tirana, offering a mix of history, culture, and nature. Whether you’re exploring the medieval castle, shopping in the bazaar, or hiking in the mountains, this charming town provides an incredible glimpse into Albania’s past.

You can find day trips to Krujë here. Or, a taxi will cost £25 – £30. You can also get a bus from the main bus terminal in Tirana. However, the terminal is a 20 minute drive from the city centre so you would need to take a taxi or a bus there as well.

Pellumbas

Just 45 minutes from Tirana, the village of Pellumbas is one of the best nature escapes near the capital. Situated in the Skorana Gorge, Pellumbas is home to Pellumbas Cave, also known as the Black Cave. This cave is a fascinating natural wonder with a rich history. It is perfect for hikers, history lovers, and those looking to experience Albania’s gorgeous landscapes.

The adventure begins with a 2 km hiking trail from the village to the cave. The trek offers breathtaking views of the Erzen River and surrounding canyons. The path is well-marked but can be rocky in places, so sturdy shoes are recommended. Along the way, you’ll pass scenic lookout points where you can take in the dramatic cliffs and lush greenery. Pellumbas Cave is 360 meters deep and is believed to have been inhabited as far back as 3 million years. Inside, you’ll find impressive stalactites and stalagmites, as well as the remains of ancient species, including cave bears. A flashlight or headlamp is essential, as the cave is completely dark inside, adding to the sense of mystery.

Beyond the cave, Pellumbas village also offers a taste of traditional Albanian rural life. You can stop by a local guesthouse or restaurant for a meal, enjoying authentic dishes like freshly baked bread, grilled meats, and homemade cheeses. The surrounding area is also great for picnicking, birdwatching, and photographt. This make Pellumbas one of the best day trips from Tirana.
