The Arcul de Triumf (Arch of Triumph) is one of Bucharest’s most iconic landmarks, holding significant historical and cultural meaning. This beautiful monument is a proud symbol of Romanian unity and national pride and a fun activity in Bucharest.
Initially erected in 1878 to commemorate Romania’s independence from the Ottoman Empire, the Arcul de Triumph has been adapted several times to signify other historical events. The current version, built between 1921 and 1922 and renovated in 1936, celebrates Romania’s victory in World War I and the subsequent unification of Romanian territories.
You will find intricate sculptures and bas-reliefs created by some of Romania’s most renowned artists, including Constantin Baraschi, Ion Jalea, and Dimitrie Paciurea. With each wall showing key moments in Romanian history, symbolizing the country’s struggles and triumphs, it is adorned with inscriptions paying tribute to Romanian heroes.
During certain times of the year, the Arcul de Triumf is open to the public, so you can climb to the top and enjoy panoramic views of the city. At other times, particularly on Romania’s National Day, December 1st, the arch becomes the backdrop for huge processions, ceremonies, and grand patriotic displays.
